Bollywood West was invited by the University of Denver’s ethnomusicology department to present a lecture and demonstration on the history of Bollywood dance and music, the evolution of multicultural musical traditions in the Indian diaspora, and the influence and use of Indian music by contemporary western music artists. Examining the history of motion picture in India, through the confluence of eastern and western pop cultures, students explored the rising popularity of multicultural music and the different influences leading to the creation of new styles like Bhangraton, Chutney Soca, South Asian hip hop, and Bhangragga. Following the lecture presentation, students participated in a Bollywood dance workshop, comparing western jazz, hip hop, and street dance movement to Indian classical and folk dance styles. Many thanks to Professor Morelli for creating this wonderful opportunity to share our passion and knowledge with DU students. Stapleton Front Porch magazine, August 2006 issue Bollywood West has been invited to join Drs. Deepak Chopra and David Simon for their Denver-area presentation of “Seduction of Spirit”, a profound weekend of renewal designed to help you restore, reflect, rejuvenate, and re-connect with yourself. The most profound spiritual experience offered by The Chopra Center for Well-Being, this extraordinary meditation retreat offers tranquility, peacefulness, discovery, and inspiration. We are honored to provide Bollywood dance classes in the company of such world-renowned wellness visionaries. Bollywood West was thrilled to participate in the 2006 East Indian Heritage Camp, teaching Bollywood dance classes to international adoptees of South Asian heritage with their adoptive families. Families from across the country have been attending this camp for the past 13 years, and have each year gained a fuller appreciation of India's vast and beautiful culture while building a community of people with similar life experiences. Friendships are created, strengthened and renewed each year - friendships that endure across the miles. Heritage Camp provides programming for toddlers through high school seniors, and their parents. These age appropriate workshops emphasize the relevant culture, and may include language, dance, folktales, traditional songs, and arts and crafts. Also adoption, race and general self-esteem issues are included where appropriate. The hands-on experience is a focal point of each camp, where the children get to experience their culture's home and community through crafts, games, cooking and more. Colorado Heritage Camps is an amazing organization, and we are proud to be a part of this annual event! Westword June 29, 2006 issue
